Naming the Dream

At the 1956 Dartmouth Summer Research Project, John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, and others coined 'artificial intelligence' and set the agenda: can machines simulate every aspect of learning and intelligence? Early programs played checkers and proved logic theorems, fueling wild optimism and, after repeated failures, bitter disappointment.

The Long Winters

Progress stalled when problems proved harder than hoped. Funding dried up in cycles called 'AI winters.' But quiet work continued: expert systems in the 1980s, then a slow buildup in statistics, computing power, and data that would change everything.

The Deep-Learning Breakthrough

Around 2012, neural networks trained on GPUs began crushing image and speech benchmarks. In 2016, AlphaGo defeated a Go champion with a move no human would have played (see AlphaGo's Move 37), proving machines could be creative, not just fast. The age of deep learning had arrived.

The ChatGPT Moment

Large language models trained on the internet's text learned to converse, summarize, and create. OpenAI's ChatGPT reached 100 million users in two months after its 2022 launch (see the ChatGPT launch), making AI the fastest-adopted technology in history faster even than the telephone or the web.

What Comes Next

AI now writes code, discovers drugs, and powers cars. It also deepens worries about jobs, misinformation, and control. Unlike fire or the wheel, this tool learns from use and may one day steer the very research that improves it. Humanity has built many revolutions. This may be the first one that watches back.
